Forget about any references to Communism. It was based on terror pure and simple.

I disagree with Balanchine, Stalin was a fairly typical communist dictator. But that's not helping you much. The first thing you can do is refer to Wikipedia:

Joseph Stalin was a great ruler. He kept the vast USSR under his iron hand and beside the iron curtain. He gave bread to all the outlying areas and the poor could obtain place to live and bread to eat.
He won the war and people's devotion,
I respect him very much

are you talking to me ?
and if so, just because he gave a few dry crusts to a few people that is nowhere near enough evidence to prove he wasn't an evil dictator
i am afriad there is plenty of evidence to suggest otherwise
the party policy of the bolsheviks was very simple anyway, it was land and bread, aswell as withdrawing from the great war
i certainly admire the man in a certain way, he held on to the nation in a way which was probably the only way to do so at that time, but that doesn't mean wasn't over zealous
he killed and let alot of people die for very poor reasons

Stalin took far more bread from ordinary people than he ever gave them. No one knows how many people died of starvation in the exceptionally fertile black earth regions of Ukraine in the 1930s as a result of Stalin's genocidal policies, but it was probably more than were killed in the Jewish Holocaust. If you want to find another great communist provider food, look to North Korea.

Hi,
Thanks for the compliment, chalsealauren. Of course I'm not that smart, I'm just that much older than you. If you're 13, I'm 31 yrs older than you - in other words I've had 31 more years than you to learn and find out about things. But when you get to be as ancient as me, you become lazy, so this time I've just cut and pasted from the Wikipedia article I gave you a link to earlier. Apart from the purges and shaow case trials, Stalin also deported vast numbers of potential opponents to Siberia (you must appreciate that Russia is vast). You can find out more about the deportations if you click onto the Wikepedia link.
Cheers, Jozef
...
Stalin, as head of the Politburo, consolidated near-absolute power in the 1930s that started with a Great Purge of his political and ideological opponents (real or merely suspected), culminating not only in the extermination of the majority of the original Bolshevik Central Committee, and of over half of the largely pliant delegates of the 17th Party Congress in January 1934, but also of huge swathes of the population. Measures ranged from imprisonment in Gulag labor camps to execution after a show trial or summary trial by NKVD troikas.
The Purges commenced after the assassination of Sergei M. Kirov. This led Stalin to begin his tightening of control over the country by dramatically increasing vigilance, arrests, Soviet propaganda, and accusations of other members of the Party.
Another possible reason that is alleged for the Great Purge was that a plan by nazi general Reinhard Heydrich and his SD to convince Stalin that the leadership of the Red Army were planning a coup in the Soviet Union was successful. They used faked documents about the communication between top leaders of Red Army and Nazists, which were found by the secret services and sent to Stalin. However, there is evidence, that this was a double bluff by Stalin. John Toland, in his biography of Adolf Hitler alludes to the theory that evidence for a Red Army coup was planted for the SD to find, this was in turn fed back to Stalin and used as an excuse to initiate the purge.
Several trials known as the Moscow Trials were held, but the procedures were replicated throughout the country. There were four key trials during this period: the Trial of the Sixteen (August 1936); Trial of the Seventeen (January 1937); the trial of Red Army generals, including Marshal Tukhachevsky (June 1937); and finally the Trial of the Twenty One (including Bukharin) in March 1938. Most notably in the case of the brilliant Tukhachevsky, Stalin murdered his best officers, to say nothing of the prominent political figures executed during the Purge Trials. The loss of men like Tukhachevsky cost the Soviet Union dearly in the German invasion of June 22, 1941 and its aftermath.
Trotsky's August 1940 assassination in Mexico, where he had lived in exile since 1936, eliminated the last of Stalin's opponents among the former Party leadership. Only three members of the "Old Bolsheviks" (Lenin's Politburo) now remained in Politburo β€”Stalin himself, "the all-Union Chieftain" (всесоюзный староста Mikhail Kalinin, and Chairman of Sovnarkom Vyacheslav Molotov. The repression of so many formerly high-ranking revolutionaries and party members led Leon Trotsky to claim that a "river of blood" separated Stalin's regime from that of Lenin. In contrast, Solzhenitsyn is among those who allege that Stalin drew inspiration from Lenin's regime with the presence of labour camps and the executions of political opponents that occurred during the Russian Civil War.
Nikolai Yezhov, the young man strolling with Stalin to his left, was shot in 1940. He was edited out from a photo by Soviet censors. Such retouching was a common occurrence during Stalin's reign.
No segment of society was left untouched during the purges. Article 58 of the legal code, listing prohibited "anti-Soviet activities", was applied in the broadest manner. Initially, the execution lists for the enemies of the people were confirmed by the Politburo. Over time the procedure was greatly simplified and delegated down the line of command. People would inform on others arbitrarily, to attempt to redeem themselves, or to gain small retributions. The flimsiest pretexts were often enough to brand someone an "Enemy of the People", starting the cycle of public persecution and abuse, often proceeding to interrogation, torture and deportation, if not death. Nadezhda Mandelstam, the widow of the poet Osip Mandelstam and one of the key memoirists of the Purges, recalls being shouted at by Akhmatova, also a famous Russian poet: "Don't you understand? They are arresting people for nothing now?" The Russian word troika gained a new meaning: a quick, simplified trial by a committee of three subordinated to NKVD. Towards the end of the purge, the Politburo relieved NKVD head Nikolai Yezhov, from his position for overzealousness. He was subsequently executed. Some historians such as Amy Knight and Robert Conquest postulate that Stalin had Yezhov and his predecessor, Yagoda, removed in order to deflect blame from himself.
In parallel with the purges, efforts were done to rewrite the history in Soviet textbooks and other propaganda materials. Notable people killed by NKVD were removed from the texts and photographs as if they never existed. Gradually, the history of revolution was transformed to a story about just two key characters: Lenin and Stalin.

chalsealauren,
To put it as simply as I possibly can, Stalin skilfully used fear. He told everyone there was an evil enemy set on destroying the Soviet Union and used that as an excuse to create a very powerful secret police force. This police force then arrested 'suspects', that is anyone Stalin wanted to be arrested, kept them in prison and tortured them for as long as it took to break them. Once a 'suspect' was psychologically broken, he would say anything his torturers wanted him to say. Such 'suspects' were then put on trial and would publicly declare that they had been working for the Soviet Union's enemies and planning to overthrow the government, they would also say that Stalin's political opponents were involved in this plan and were also working for the enemy. This gave Stalin the excuse to arrest the named enemies and the process would start all over again.
Cheers, Jozef

Some years ago Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scotland had a couple of films about a Scottish woman who had been brought up in Russia. Her father had been a communist who emigrated to the "worker's paradise" in the 1920s.
I think he died and they were living with their mother.
One day her mother was arrested by the secret police on her way home - she was foreign so must be a spy.
The children were left at home without any word from the authorities but luckily (and surpisingly) her mother managed to talk her way out of the prison.
Later the whole family was arrested and sent off to camps where most died through malnutrition and misttreatment.
She survived the war with her mother but lost touch with her brother who she thought had also survived the war.
She managed to get back to Scotland during Khruschev's period in power.
The TV programme found her brother in Canada but he would not at first admit who he was - thirty years or so after the war he was still afraid the Russian secret police would come and take him back or kill him.

There are many reports of Soviet PoW's who were returned to the USSR at the end of the war by the British being shot as soon as they were out of sight of their British guards. Many committed suicides rather than be handed over to the Soviets.
