Do any of you know where I might be able to find list of soldiers who were in a regiment called the black & tans.
Family "legend" suggest I may have had an ancestor in the black & tans but I can't find anything to confirm this, Having read about them i'm not surprised no one wants to admit to being related to one either!!
I would be eternally grateful for any help.
Thanks
Rachel

and you guys say Americans are naive
No offence intented Rachel.
I'd say the British National Archives are your best and only bet. Anything that has been released will be there. A lot of the Irish records relating to the Black and Tans are deemed too sensitive for general release and remain classified. Probably to avoid stirring up old tensions. You might be out of luck if the British have adopted the same policies.
And their official name isn't the Black and Tans, that was a nickname they were given after some Limerick wag noticed their half-police/half-army uniforms made them look like a local pack of hunting dogs going by that name. Officially, they were considered reinforcements for the Royal Irish Constabulary and their records would be with those of the RIC, most likely.
I'm not completely up to date on the subject but I hope this helps a bit.
Would be interested to know the answer, have a fairly baseless theory that my Grandad might have been in them.
If you know the history of the Black and Tans and Ireland I wouldn't be too proud to a family member as one. Sorry to be so blund.
If my theory is correct then it means he kept it to himself, and so was not proud of it himself.
I wouldn't be proud either, but it is interesting.
Weren't they created as the government didn't want to escalate the conflict be deploying regulars. One of so many 'If onlys'.
Have found this link, It may or may not be useful to anyonr trying to trace someone from the b & t's.
you never know.

Since nobody has mentioned it so far, I might mention a good introductory book: Richard Bennett's The Black and Tans. Hulton, 1959.
I would agree that this book is an excellent introductory source of information. good choice.
