    stantheman2,

That is a mwatter of opinion and also depends on what nationality you are.

Surely you agree that patriotism plays and will dominate in the answer to your question.

Just to help you I would think that each participating country had good and bad aircrews.

I agree with the previous post - the best pilot tends to depend on which country your from. hartman and the other 'experten' would certainly be in the running, if only in terms of the massive number of kills, but its worth pointing out that many had started Spain, then had a relatively easy time in Poland and much of the French campaign. Even in the early days of the Russian front, a ME109 with a decent pilot was a deadly combination against much of the Russian airforce in 1941-2. Once the Yaks & Laggs were issued in large numbers, it became much more difficult for the german pilots. Unlike british & US pilots, Luftwaffe pilots were constantly in action due to the failures of the german training programme. Allied pilots tended to have greater breaks between tours, and were more often rotated. It would be interesting to see the Russian's in the reckoning, and perhaps the Finns (who scored many victories using the Buffalo!). Ultimately, the skill of an individual is only so valauble without a decent aircraft, the right tatics and sufficient numbers.
