Military Intervention in the Persian Gulf

  Hi all,
  
  Anyone interested in the military interventions in the Persian Gulf before Desert Shield/Storm/Op. Granby?
  
  My knowledge/understanding of the time is a bit patchy although I am aware of SAS intervention in Dhofar and the pull-out in Aden. I was wondering though if we struggled then because of our mis-conception of what the people wanted like we are now? Or was it a case like in Dhofar/Oman that the people didn't want a socialist/marxist government and that's why we were successful in supporting the incumbent regime.
  
  It does seem a bit funny (not in a ha ha way) that we were pretty successful (as far as I know) in these areas and stuggling badly in Iraq (and I can imagine we did a few more questionable things in these places where the cameras feared to tread).
  
  I suppose I should also include our intervention in Afghanistan which more than Iraq matches the type of op. that we pulled off in the Mid-East at the formentioned time.

  One of the more interesting ones was OP VANTAGE in 1961, when the then Iraqi government threatened to invade Kuwait (which had just gained full independence), and the Brits put commandos, paras, a carrier battle group and Hunters and Canberras into Kuwait and surrounding waters, as a deterrent.
  No invasion.
