Can anybody assist me? I am trying to find info about canadains that were based in surrey, My wife uncle was in the Hastings and Prince Edwards regiment. We know that he was first based at Aldershot but we believe he was based at Ranmore Common near Dorking for some time, this being when he met his Wife. His Regiment fought on the Gothic Line in Italy. On Aug 27th 1944 he won a medal for bravery whilst under fire.

I do not know which outfit it was but the Canadians were around the Redhill/Reigate area of Surrey in 1941.
I was returning a horse from the Blacksmiths were I was employed as a 16-year-old Apprentice. I was under strict instructions to walk all horses back to their stables but, on one occasion it was raining and late in the day so I took a chance and rode a much prized horse bareback and with only a halter and rope as a control.
Unfortunately going up Redstone Hill in Redhill we bumped into a Canadian lorry convey which spooked the horse and caused it to bolt. I got into a lot of trouble!
The Canadians tended to drive on either side of the road, which caused many problems! They were also better paid than young civilian lads and grabbed all the best girls. This caused other problems! Can anybody assist me? I am trying to find info about canadains that were based in surrey, My wife uncle was in the Hastings and Prince Edwards regiment. My great aunt, who lived in Shamley Green,a small village near Guildford, met a Canadian soldier in WW2 and married him - she still lives in Victoria BC.

Canadian Engineers were based at Pendel Camp to the south of Merstham. The camp was later used for the refugees of Trinstan de Cuna and by the Wycliffe Bible Translators before the M23 was put in right by it and it was abandonned.

In 1943 the church and vicerage of All Saints South Merstham were destroyed by an aeriel mine and the Canadian Royal Engineers built a new temporary church in a few weeks from the rubble. They were inspired by their chaplain Captain Woolfendale MBE who later died in Itlay during the war. The church, which may be the only one built during the war still stands, not as the church but as Canada Hall and has a Canadian style to it with a very high pitched roof. There are a number of mommentos of the building of the hall their including pictures of Captain Woolfendale and the engineers building the hall. There was a 50th anniversary celebration in 1993 attended by the Canadian High Commissioner and Canadian veteran organisations.

    Hope this is of use.
