In a speech at the outset of the Battle of Britain Winston Churchill said:
"Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilisation."
Surely he was exaggerating?
Mick_mac,
Yes.
AA.
Arnold,
Thanks for that! I thought it would spark a nice little discussion.

PS Just prior to the First Gulf War Saddam Hussein is reported to have said:
"If Bush wants war we will give it to him. This will be the mother of all wars."
Was he exaggerating?

Looking at it, on the face of it yes he probably was just being melodramatic. However, consider the implications if GB had lost the battle of Britain. The unchristian Nazis would have taken over vast swathes of the world from the British Empire. They soon would have been able to destroy America once preparations were made. With America under its belt, the godless USSR would have been next. Christian Civilisation would really have come to an end.
Mick_mac,
sorry, I have a fault of treating everything literally.
Cheers AA. (As to what Saddam thought, if he did?, I have no idea).
Arnold,
That's OK. You are correct , taking it literally and it's not a fault.
Mick (who's trying to stir it a little and raise a bit of a stink!)
