Austro-Serbian Alliance

  Ok I'm doing coursework about the causes of world war 1 for my GCSE's and after proof-reading my essay I've noticed that I've said that Austria-Hungary and Serbia formed an alliance in 1881 to stop Russia taking control of Serbia, but didn't Russia back Serbia after the ultimatum? I'm getting a bit confused, was this alliance really formed?

  No. Follwoing the occupation of B-H in 1878, Austria pressed Serbia to move towards a customs union, but when the Serb PM renegeed on it, the Austrians forced the King to instal a more conservative and less pro-Russian government , which in April 1881, signed a 10 year commercial treaty with Austria, which was quite clsoe to a customs union. 3 months later the King signed a secret agreement, which prevented Serbia signbing any alliance without Austrian permission and obliged them to stop pro-Serb agitation within Austrian lands, including Bosnia. It was essentially Austrian policy to keep the lid on pro-Serb nationalism, which threatened her southern territories, but also to keep the Russians out of the area.
