As i have a certain nickname I was wondering if anyone knew of any sources (or have general knowledge) which illustrate the army uniforms used between 1660 - 1720 and the origins of the redcoat.
Army records apparently have been damaged by fire in the past so not much survives.

    redcoat,

I don't know a whole lot about this subject, but I can tell that the Redcoat originated during the English civil war between the Royalists and the Parliamentarians. The war was in a virtual deadlock when Oliver Cromwell pushed a bill through parliament that barred anyone noble in parliament from command of the army, and put the emphasis on skill rather then connections. Also, they reformed the army, retrained all the soldiers, and gave them their famous red coats, as red was the cheapest cloth available to them.

    Cheers inclined,

I know later on that red was the basic colour but the cut of cloth was not uniform. Colonels of regiments were responsible for designing the trim and lining of the coats in their ranks. Of course the officer class was of a lot higher quality.

Artillery and pioneers men were often in blue, and cavalry ranged from buff coats to dark blue for the horse grenadiers.

There are transcripts of the original New Model Army Supply Contracts here: if those are any good to you.
