It's a long time since I read anything about this, but it was an old style "ship burial" where the body of an important man was laid in a ship and then covered over. The ship contained his weapons and treasure. I think the man in question is believed to have been called Raedwald and was king of one of East Anglia, one of the seven Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. Raedwald was also, known as "Bretwalda", that is, the kings of the other Saxon kingdoms acknowledged that he was the most powerful or influential, so while not exactly King of England, he was top man in England.

If you Google for "Sutton Hoo Society", you'll find a lot of information, and links to the National Trust site, also very good.
