my grandad got a bronze oak leaf and was in mids i've looked and looked in the london gazette and not found him. i put his full name albert fothergill in and nothing comes up. i put his sur name in fothergill and get results but not him, just peple with the same surname, am i missing something or doing something wrong. i need to find his rank, regiment or even his service number so i can get his service records.
Check for mis-spelled surnames - e.g. "Fothegill" or "Fothergil" - there are a lot like that. Did he have any other forenames? I once spent a week looking for Great-Uncle George, only to discover his real first name (which he hated) was "Redvers". (Bet some of you can work out which generation HE belonged to)
Which war/campaign was it in?

The Gazettes are complete. As DL says, when was he in the forces? If it WAS WWI, then the Great War forum has loads of useful hints - take a look at
