  How did the Government plan as increasingly important role in peoples lives during the first world war? please help me answer that essay ques! thx xxxx

  Do you mean 'play' or 'plan', as two different things. 'Play' seems to make more sense.
  
  First answer has to be: CONSCRIPTION. If the governmetn is conscripting l8year olds plus to go and sacrifice themselves pointlessly in the trenches, that'sa pretty big impact on your life!
  
  Second would be rationing. I don't think rationing inthe first war was as draconian or possibly as well organised in the second, but I think it existed. Britain was not self-sufficient in food by then, and so all imported food had to be obtained in the teeth of the german navy. Luxury imports ditto.
  
  Third might be censorship. I think letters from the trenches were censored (i don't think everyone on the home front relaised just how grim things were out there?) Newspapers were probably censored as well - don't want people at home knowing that 60k got killed the first day of the Somme now, do we chaps?
  
  To some extent, I think one might plausibly argue that the WWI 'home front' was a prototype for the far more rigorous WWII 'home front'. This was, after all, the begining of 'total war'. It was the first war that homeland citizens got bombed - from Zeppelins.
  
  I'm sure others here will plunge in with loads more stuff, and will probaly correct some of mine, as it is only off the top of my head!
