Chelsea Pensioner.

  Hello, I am researching my dads dads family history and have been told that my great great grandfather was a Chelsea Out Pensioner. But this is as much as i know, i have no first name and his surname is so common (Hughes), but i have been told that to be an out pensioner was fairly rare. How would i find any further information to help my search? I live in South East London so any online resorces or places i can visit in my area would be very helpful.

  The imperial war museum has a data base you can enter the name of a relative and if they were in the first world war it will show up. If the name is fairly common, eg, Hughes, you will need a few details about them, such as whereabouts they came from, what regiments they joined etc. But it might give you some clues. You could, one assumes, also try the Chelsea Hospital itself and the national army museum?

  Does any one know of a website that i may be able to look up chealsea pensionners on? I dont know where to start with this.
