    jess191,

Almost totally. The Third Reich had a very simple system for dealing with malcontents and it wasn't an ASBO or Community Service with rehabilitation order.

    Cheers AA.

The Nazi Party was the most popular of the political parties in the early 30s before assuming total control, so it stands to reason that it had a good foundation of support.

After that it's difficult to say but a good book is one that called "The war that hitler won" and was basically about the propaganda machine under Goebbels that kept support for the regime even when defeat was inevitable. I can't remember who the author was, but it will help answer your question.

Put it this way, the Nazi party/regime was defeated by outside influences/powers and not internal rebellion/insurrection

    Hope this helps

    DF

If you mean the countries they invaded or occupied, the Nazis had the tactic of persuading young men to join the fight by convincing them it was a fight against bolshevism. It was pretty successful in that brigades of SS were formed from Occupied territories that the nazis ludicriously thought were ethnically acceptable. There is a lot of debate about the extent of collaboration in France with the nazi regime - it was pretty widespread up till 44.

If that failed to sign them up, there was forced conscription, deportation to labour camps and all the other delights they had up their sleeve.

Given that in the 1932 election, the Nazi party had 37% of the votes, giving them 1/3 of the seats in the Reichstag, and after the 1933 election they had 44% of the votes giving 288 of them 647 available seats support was far from complete. but more significantly, it was more support than any other party - The second place party was the Social democratic party who gained 120 seats, then the Catholic Centre Party with 91, then the Communist party with 81, the Nationalist party with 52 and other parties with 23 between them.

All this in spite of Goering's claims of various Communist plots....

With Hitler's populist policies for Employment, gaining back lost German pride, re-claiming the Saarland, Sudetenland, re-militarising of the Rein, military expansion etc Hitler's support certainly increased but was again, far from complete.

After the annexation of Austria, the Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia, quick military victories over Poland, France and the routing of the BEF, support increased not only amongst the populous, but in the military.

In the end, I suppose, just too many people went along with Hitler rather than out and out support. As to why there was no mass-revolt like in Italy with Mussolini? The German people were more complicit with mass-crimes than the Italian people, and because of this, fought to the end.
