  World War I
  
  What do you think would have happened if the German's didn't invade the French?
  Would war still have broken out?
  Would it have made a difference?
  
  (Questions that I'm posting at the moment are from students in my Yr9 History class. Thanks heaps for any replies).

  The war had aleady broken out by the time Germany invaded France. It started with Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia, which led to Russia, Germany, France joining in on behalf of their allies.
  
  The war was pretty much inevitable and all it needed wa something to light the fuse. Princip's assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the match, but if it hadn't been that, it would have been something else.
  
  The war was, in my view a result of too many nations trying to build or maintain empires in the style of the 19th centruy, without realising that military technology has moved into the 20th century. In this respect, the lessons of the American Civil War were ignored. Everyone expected a short war,the same as most others had been (Crimea, Franco-Prussian) between the European states. There was, therefore, not much incentive to stay out of a war as the perceived drawbacks were far outweighed by the perceived benefits. The reality, of course, was the exact opposite.
