Britain’s last acknowledged serviceman from the outbreak of the Great War, and last participant of the 1914 ‘Christmas truce’ in No-man’s land has died yesterday at the ripe old age of 109.
Although the German’s won the football game in no-man’s land (apparently) the incident shines demonstrating the futility of that particular conflict and the millions of deaths.
With Alfred’s death, I believe it’s the end of an era. Only 9 more British Great War veterans survive.
RIP.
Cheers Alfred,
The last of the Old Contemptibles.
We won't forget.

Yes RIP Alfred, the last Scottish survivor of the Great War...it's kind of strange that now he's gone the Great War really has just passed into history (in Scotland anyway). A lovely old gentleman, and a credit to the Black Watch. Just a pity the gvt. is intent on getting rid of them.
May Alfred’s evenings in Valhalla be filled with rough red wine, dark haired dancing girls, the smell of cordite in the air, and the pipes and drums of the B.W. Cheers Alfred, thank you, and God Bless you. R.I.P.
Hi evrybody
who is Alfred Anderson?
Faran1,
It says who he is on my opening thread.
Faran1,
It says who he is on my opening thread.Â
See above, in reading reports of the thoughts of these last few heroes, I was moved by the comment from one...at the age of well over 100..he said to paraphrase..."I have spent my whole life trying to forget, and your questions have stirred it all up again..........."
But we will never forget them.
RIP
