My Gt. Gran's first husband, Samuel John Barnes is said to have deserted from the boer war. He was born in Pontypool in 1873.
He avoided capture and fled to the US under an assumed name.
How can I find out about his service records during his time with the South African Mounted Rifles, and if his desertion was actually discovered?
The National Archives, Kew, may have some record but there is not a lot for the Boer War. Also South African archives might have some record, but you will probably need a location.
