my g grandad died on the 25th november1917 passhendale, he was in the 2nd batttlion kings own light yorkshire infantry i have been emailed by somebody who has said the infantry he was in did not take part in the battle// 2nd KOYLI were in 32nd Division and were not involved in 3rd Ypres which ended on 10th November 1917. They were brought in afterwards and went into the line to relieve the battered survivors. is this true. passhendale ended on the 11th of nov the strange thing about this is that in the few days leading up to charles death only a couple of soldiers died and after the 25th again only a few soldiers died but on the 25th 25 soldiers died why what happened on that day in november that the 25 died also been told that they were sent on a small mission again why after passhendale was over can anyone shed any light on this

You would need to look at the official war diaries at The National Archives, Kew, the official regimental history or their museum to confirm the events.

    Hi there,

I think that the problem is that just because the Battle of Passchendaele had officially ended, this does not mean that the fighting stopped. Small actions such as raids, night patrols etc took place continually, and fighting was almost constant. The only difference a battle made was the severity of the fighting.
Even during a quiet period of the war, the daily casualty figures numbered some 5000 per day, so this is not unusual. As the previous post said, the war diaries of your relative's regiment will be able to shed some more light on what actually happened, although the entry may simply show "25 killed", with no explanation as to what happened.
