I have looked back over the old discussions to see if this has been asked before but couldn't find anything.
As a result of chats with a relative who has just been on an organised trip to Malta, where he served during the 2nd World War, my partner has decided he'd really like to know more about the war.
What he'd like is a really good 'general' book so that he can see which bit interests him most and read further from there on those specific areas.
Does anyone have any recommendations for this sort of book. I appreciate it's a huge topic but I'm hoping there is something decent which covers the whole period that I can buy him for Christmas.
Many thanks in advance,
FF

Hi
I appreciate it's not a book but you could do much worse than get your partner "The World at War" Video/DVD. I remember watching this as a child every Sunday afternoon and recently boughtit on DVD. Extraordinary mix of interviews and archive footage coupled with Lawrence Olivier's narration - superb !

Thanks Docs. I had seen that and thought it looked good, so recommendations are always appreciated. I may well get him that but I would still like a really good book too. I suppose he's worth it, even if it probably means I'll get no conversation out of him at all over Christmas lol.

If he's anything like Mrs Docs that will be money well spent !
i read a book not too long ago about the battle of britain. its not the best written or longest ever, but it is a nice little story.
i took the liberty of getting the web link for you... don't know if it'll hyperlink though... just copy and paste if it doesn't...

Hi, FF,
I'd reccomend John Keegan and his "History of the 2nd World War". On the downside, it's mainly military history, has a slight American bias (to my eyes). On the upside is written to be readable and covers almost every theatre of the war.
Cheers AA.

I would also seriously Band of Brothers.
expensive, but long, moving, accurate, facts and lots of extras make this the best war non-film programme i ever saw.
at the end of the day its your choice.
i seriously recommed it though.
oh and some scenes are quite upsetting, both phsically and mentally.
