Just a guess, but probably some colonial action like Omdurmann.

It was at Laing's Nek, on 28th January 1881, during the First Anglo-Boer War. The regiment involved was the 58th Foot.

If I could ask a follow up to the original question, does anyone know the last time a British Regiment had their colours captured in battle?

I dont know if this will help, but at Waterloo the duke of Wellington ordered the colours the rear for the first time.
so it must been have at the battle just days before, Quatre Bras.

It was at Maiwand, on 27 July 1880, when an Afghan army inflicted a major disaster on an Anglo-Indian force under General Burrows. The colours of the 66th Foot (Berkshire Regiment) were captured after all the men defending them had been killed and the rest of the British force driven off the field. As far as I know, the colours were never recovered.

The previous year, both colours of the 2nd Battalion, 24th Foot had been captured by the Zulus following the annihilation of a British force at Isandhlwana (the battle that features in the film "Zulu Dawn"). Lieutenants Melville and Coghill attempted to carry the Queen's Colour of the 1/24th to safety but were both killed: the colour was lost in a river but (unlike the 2/24th's) it was later recovered.
