My favourite sites that make you "feel" the history of a place.
1)Xi'an, China: Site of Emperor Qin's Terracotta Army.
Significant in reunited China after 5000 years to become first Emperor of China. Would the world be the same if he hadn't?
2)The pyramids, Egypt - still the greatest monuments to one of the worlds great civilizations.
3)Rhodes Old Town,Greece - as alive now as it was in Crusader times, and conjours up the Early middle ages as you wander the back streets.
4)Bosworth field, Leicestershire - easy to visualise the drama of the end of plantagenet England by these momentus events.
5)Red Square Moscow- quick before they move Lenin. Significant in representing late c19 and most of the c20s major events and politics, all in sight of this square.
6)Rome - anywhere it's so full of the past.
7)Edinburgh Old Town - so many contributions to the history of the British Isles can be sensed on this dramatic outcrop.
Places that I have been to?
1) Angkor temples complex
2) Arromanches, Normandy.
3) London Bridge
4) Red Square is a good one
5) Uluru/Ayers Rock
6) Sacre Coeur
7) Roma is another very good choice
I have not been fortunate enough to visit too many of those mentioned above, but here are a few of my personal favourites.
Hadrian's Wall
Avebury
Stonehenge.
Ollantaytambo and the Sachsayhuaman fortress in Peru. Bits of Berlin in 1992 were still full of Russian bullet holes as are parts of the Buda Castle mount even now.
Berlin - shoulda gone last century, want to go to Habana before he goes....
l was very impressed by the Alhambra Palace in Granada, especially with a few nuggets of information to make the most of our visit.
