I've been fascinated to see the debates over tactics and whether or not the game supports Nelson's approach.

Speaking as the current top scorer, I can safely say you can ignore any historical learning about the battle and enjoy it as a game.

Having said that, you do need to think about concentration of forces and making sure you engage the front of the combined fleet fairly early to ensure they "turn to face".

If you too, wish to see the French and Spainards get even more of a kicking than they did 200 years ago. Here's what worked for me.

Form up your ships into one group heading north, whilst moving the whole lot to the East at the same time. Try and ensure that by the time you're close to the French (why are they Red and the English Blue?), get into a line (with no breaks) going north, with several ships in a 2nd line, as supports.

Only when you've "pinned" a number of red ships (dismasted them) start to feed in the 2nd line ships through gaps and around the ends.

Remember to not get too aggressive, losing ships costs points, in particular if you lose a flagship and you lose 200 points (these are the targets referred to at the end). Doing this could mean you destroy all of the ships from the "jumped up little corporal" in 18 moves and ensure you don't lose any of your own - good luck (you need that as well).

Warwick - (Wargamer of "old school")
