Hope you can help with this, as I've been unable to find much on the subject.

If you were conscripted during WW2 did one have any say about which arm of service you joined?

For example I'm a graduate in the South West, with no sailing experience, can't fly and am not particulalry mechanically minded. Would I have been dumped into the nearest infantry regiment? As a private or an officer? Was there an option to say, "I quite fancy spending the war sitting down, can I have a tank please?" or did it depend entirely on what regiments needed bringing up to strength?

Any comments or recommendations of reading materials would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

the later you were conscripted the less choice you had AFAIK, you would have been put into whatever needed the bodies more at that point, so if there was an Army regiment short of men, then off to Yorkshire you would go.

Many young men volunteered so that they did get a choice rather than wait to be conscripted and end up in the P.B.I.

    Hi SabreWulf

I was 'conscripted' in October 1942.

After 6 weeks of Primary Training during which one took various 'aptitude' tests I was posted to a Royal Artillery Driver/Operator Training Unit.

I have written much about my Army career on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ WW2 Peoples War site, one piece which concerned my 'choice' of unit can be found here:

    Hope this helps

    Regards

    Ron
