Exactly the same reason the Killed Millions of Soviets, Hundreds of thousands of Axis POW's.... I see it as just a continuation of Stalin's purges.

I think many forget that on the outbreak of invasion, Poland was a militarised society, the killing of, for example, the 4000 or so officers in the Katyn forest is a way of removing the head from the military body.

Hi Mani, I sort of thought of that as a purging of the intelligentsia and educated. I thought it similar to the murder of his own senior officer corps. Then again who can really figure out Stalin and his motives.

    Cheers.

Is there not also a history of Polish / Rusian antagonism? Not that Stalin needed an excuse, I suppose.

Soviet murderes killed in 1940 about 25.000 polish officers. It was, in fact, soviet crime revange for lost war between soviet Russia and Poland in 1919-1921. Second soviet aspiration was exactly the same as nazi Germans had - to exterminate polish nation by extrmination, at first, of polish leader.

The most important aspect of that cause was horrible stupidity of soviet government.
I have written about this in massegeboard in other topic.
I said that the stupid man Josif Dzugashvili alias Sralin was too little beggar to predict the evolution of situation. And the death price of 27 mln killed soviet people is result of supidity of soviet goverment.
I have quoted such arguments to authenticate the thesis.
"If sameone can predict future situation and really see war cloud then he behave EXACTLY other way then Soviet goverment in 1939-1940.
    If Stalin could see danger
    - he didn't attack Poland with Germany in 1939
    - he didn't take up Baltic countries
    - he didn't start extermination of Poland nation (Hitler created cut terrein of Polish teritory 'general gubernia' without any polish 'Quisling'. Hitler proposed Stalin to create similiar terrein on soviet side of occupied Polish land - Stalin reject proposition)
    - he didn't attack Finlandia
    - he didn't take up part of Romania
    - he didn't send great quantity of stuff to Germany till 22.06.1941 during rest of Europe had life and death struggle with Germany".
