The Soviet's armed forces couldn't do it...with their permanent problems of transportation and supply...Thanks God that the Russian Tzar (who sold Alaska to USA for $7,000,ooo)was a very Great Dealersmiley - winkeye...Interesting though that the French inventor Nicolas Cugnot had produced the first steam-driven road vehicle in 1759 but it had no effect on the Crimean War of 1853-56 and, indeed ,remained untested for over 100 years.

I would never underestimate Russians ability in cold weather campaigns. The fact that this was a route to supply the Soviet Union during WW2 should not be ignored. However in this day and age, not a chance. I wonder how the Canadians feel about us owning the majority of their west coast.
    Cheers.

    Re: message 3.

    Expat,

it isn't the Canadians' west coast, it is yours. You bought it, as you bought Louisiana.

BTW. How was it arranged that the independent Texas came under US authority? Or isn't it?

    Kind regards.

Hi Paul, Indeed it's ours Paul, that's why I said "own" You would have to read between the lines to see what I was getting at my friend.
After the treaty between Texas and Mexico, Texas became a Republic. A few years later we became a part of the United States. When we did so Texas retained the right to revert to becoming an independent country again without penalty. Texas comes under the same federal law as the rest of America.

    Cheers.

As a alternative to this one,

I wonder if the US thought about going the opposite way? Were there ever any plans for the US to attack the Soviet Union across the Bering Straits? When the cold war was at is height, was there ever the military build-up seen in Germany? It was after all, another side to the "Iron Curtain"!

    Cheers
    DL

    stantheman,

During the cold war and long thereafter and even now ,there are sometimes little incidents in and around the Bering Sea involving Russian ( maybe spying incidents) and U.S and Canadian coast guards.

Actually why don't you google on Bering Sea and of even more interest is have a look once or twice a week at:
    www.english.pravda.ru/politics/

After politics you can type in a date, for instance 22nd September 2002 and it gives you an idea what happened that day as far as Pravda is concerned.
From time to time you can read of Bering Sea incidents.

    Expat,

you said ""their" west coast". "their" is possessive (broad smile). I read between the lines, but just for the fun...

Thanks for the enlightenment about Texas.

    Kind regards.
