Two possible alternatives:
1) Well by some miracle he survived and led Germany all the way to the end.
2) They should never have published the book where you read that

I think it would depend on the exact circumstances. If part of some ongoing power struggle inside the Nazi establishment then probably relatively minimal. If say a Jew or Pole or other despised racial group, you would probably see some very nasty atrocities against the group involved. If by one of the allies powers and clearly so then Hitler would be to a degree canonised and seen as a martyr, increasing the prestige of his policies.
If before Barbarrossa then the key point would be if a new leader attacks Russia prior to defeating Britain. [Which would be possible but very difficult after autumn 40]. In the latter case you might see a Soviet attack on Germany in say 43 or Stalin might just sit tight. If prior to 10/12/41 the big question would be does Germany declare war on the US. [Probably not]. After this date the Germans would have to do very well to avoid defeat, which since they would probably have a period of disorder while a new ruling structure emerges would be unlikely.
The real nasty point about this would be that someone competent might take over control of Germany, which could be very nasty for the rest of the world.

Hi there,
That was a tad rude indeed, considering it was a genuine question!
Anyway, my take on your thread. If Hitler had been assassinated early in the war, then it may have had a significant outcome, and not a good one in my opinion! Bearing in mind that the Germans were well and truly Nazified by the outbreak of war, and the key leadership positions were well and truly in Nazi hands, I think we would have seen Goering taking over, with Hitler being elevated to Martyr status by Nazi propaganda. Goering was considered very amiable and popular with the German people, and was far more liked than Hitler's deputy, Hess. By all accounts, old Hermann was pleasant company, and indeed his American captors after the war were famously pictured having a little party with him. Politically, there was no significant opposition left in Germany to oppose the Nazi party, so regime change would be unlikely.
If you say for example, Hitler is killed in late 1940, with Germany already having conquered Western continental Europe, then chances are that the Germans would have continued as planned (I believe Goering was an advocate of Hitler's Lebensraum theory). Now comes the bad stuff.
Hitler was a major interference to German military planning, since after the fall of France he considered himself to be a military genius.
He constantly berated his Generals and ordered them to carry out very bizarre tactical changes (the Russian Front is full of these weird plans!). Without Hitler's interference, I would see the North African campaign taking a higher precedence, with greater supplies and manpower. Rommel almost kicked the Allies out of North Africa with next to no logistical support, and had he had sufficient supplies, I would imagine he would have taken Egypt, thereby cutting the Suez canal, and then Britain is in trouble!
The Nazis had actively sought support from the Arabs, and had they succeeded in Africa, the oil of the Middle East could well be in their grasp. If this is the case, Barbarossa would have then been a two front assault into Russia, from Poland in the west, and through the Middle East in the South. I would doubt that the Russians would have been able to withstand this assault, and with the Suez lifeline now in German hands, Britain would be in a very bad state indeed.
Its always worth remembering that Operation Foxley (the British plan to assassinate Hitler) was cancelled as Churchill considered Hitler to be more use to the Allies alive due to his meddling in military matters! He considered himself a military genius, and it's fair to say he did quite well for a corporal, but as a general, he was poor.
Cheers

By the way,
Gentlemaggyann,
I wouldn't worry about causing offence on the boards too much, let's face it, we all disagree from time to time, and if we all agreed, it would be really not worth having a debate in the first place!
Hang in there,

i a agree with all the above...if Hitler had been assassinated i think it would've resulted in his canonisation and his personality cult would've grown stronger...now i'm going to post another thread.
