Hi, I'm interested to correspond with any ex-servicemen, etc. who have any recollections of air-dropped propaganda leaflets during wartime.

Perhaps you were a member of the aircrew dropping leaflets on the enemy or a soldier who found leaflets laying on the ground from the other side or were involved in the design and printing of propaganda leaflets?

I would like to hear your recollections of this interesting and non-fatal form of warfare.

    Thanks,

    Lee

    PsyWar,

Your:......... and non-fatal form of warfare.

It is also known as "Black Propaganda" and it was not as non-fatal as what you may think.

It did ( and actually still does)cause enormous psychological damage to troops especially in the front lines.

Yes, there are military men who did commit suicide as a result of Black Propaganda.
Not only the dropping of leaflets but also broadcasts directed to enemy troops caused problems under troops.

    Hi Lee,

Yes, I came across some in the first gulf war, but whoever had made them hadn’t really done too much homework – It made us laugh instead of it’s intended purpose.

I don’t recall the wording on the pamphlet, but it had a picture of two blokes walking off in the sunset hand in hand.

It’s pretty common for Arab men to hold hands without the ‘Western’ implication of homosexuality, but to us, that’s what it implied, come on walk of into the distance with the Nice Republic guardsman, assume the position and think of England. It really was amusing, but I’m trying to remember what it said….

Thanks for your reply Mani. Could this be the leaflet you are thinking of?

The text on the rear says: "With peace we will always remain united".

This one was a US produced leaflets for Iraqi troops.

Dirk, thanks for your input. Can you cite any examples of military personnel committing suicide directly (or indirectly) attributed to psychological warfare, either by leaflet, radio or loudspeaker broadcast? I have never heard of that before.

Black propaganda is rather different as it seeks to deceive its true origin. An example of this, from WWII, is a forgery of a German military newspaper which was produced in Britain and covertly disseminated amongst German troops. On the face of it, it appears to be a genuine newspaper issued by the Wehrmacht high command but in realty contained subtle subversive propaganda.

They show up in the classified section of The Numismatic News on occasion.

    Cheers.
