Can anyone recomend any good books on bomber crews and their experiences during the second world war.
I`d love to read about what it was like to take on enemy planes, bombing runs over burning citys at night, crash landings, tail and turret gunners, wounded crew members that sort of thing.
I`d like to read the thoughts and words of those brave lads who had to do this.
If it is novels you are after, Len Deighton - Bomber. For something very different (and more than a bit weird) Jospeh Heller - Catch 22. Another one is The War Lover - although I can't recall the author (John Hershey??).
For factual books, I think it is fair to say that most books were written by or about fighter pilots. The Bomber pilots didn't have the aura of glamour, even though they arguably had a more difficult job.
a good book called tail end charlie, about rear gunners in lancasters. I think it is written by that pilot who was shot down in gulf 1.
There are a couple of autobiographical books by Sqn Ldr Jack Currie: "Lancaster Target" and "Mosquito Victory". Guy Gibson's "Enemy Coast Ahead" is another.
