    Hi Stan,

    Interesting one.

OK, I would expect that Oswald Moseley would have been the first choice for a puppet Prime Minister, and probably Edward VIII reinstated as King-there is a lot of historical evidence for the Nazis wanting to almost recruit him, and I think a plot to kidnap him at some stage but I'm working off memory now so may be wrong.
Back at the beginning of the war, there were many upper-class Brits who were sympathetic to Hitler, and even supportive. One of the Mitfords (I forget which one) spent time in Nazi Germany and was quite enamoured of old Adolf.

Not sure about many positions, but William Joyce would have surfaced in some role or other-he was a particularly rabid fascist even by Moseley's standards, so probably he would have taken a "Minister of Propaganda" role, or something more sinister maybe, such as leader of a greatly expanded Britische Freikorps in the SS?

Our relationship to the Empire (this was pre-Commonwealth time), well I'm not sure on that one. This would all depend on whether Nazi occupied Britain was given a role as an ally of Germany (and thereby Japan), in which case, the Empire would have been the source of many natural resources and wealth for Germany, under the pretence of remaining under British Rule.
Far more likely however, is the outposts of Empire (India and particularly Australia, New Zealand and Canada) would have fought on, complete with a Government in Exile. The US would have been very wary of the Fascist government in Britain, and if the Japanese attacked the US, and Germany declared war on them also, then an invasion of Britain from Canada and the US would be inevitable.

If however, the Japanese sided with Hitler against Russia, then an attack against Stalin from Europe (as in Barbarossa, but more concentrated in effort since there would be no Afrika Korps, and no need to push the British out of Greece, therefore more troops available to fight in Russia), and an attack into Siberia from Manchuria by the Japanese, and things would look very bleak for Stalin!

    Cheers
    DL

Moseley almost certaintly wouldnt have been made prime minister. The nazis were pragmatic enough not to install a blatant puppet as head of gvt and instead would have installed someone along the lines of lord halifax.

    Hi gorman1

I disagree on that one, if you look at Nazi policy towards occupied nations, they had a tendency to use local fascists in government, Vidkun Quisling being the obvious example.
It's not as if they intended to be a benevolent occupier, look at the document prepared by the Nazis for planning the occupation of Britain, it has all the ingredients of typical Nazi rule-including mass deportations of the male population, einsatzgruppen, removal of all potentially hostile elements, and a nice long list of prominent British people from all walks of life who were marked out for the concentration camps or worse! Had they won, then the plan was total conquest of Britain.

    Cheers
    DL

Halifax as PM with Moseley as Chancellor, perhaps? Then a bill through Parlaiment to dethrone George VI as a fugitive (I assume he'd have joined in, willingly or not, in a "flight to the Dominions", and King Edward (probably not Queen Wallis, though - a morganatic marriage instead.

I believe that the UK would have been run in the same fashion as the other western great power which fell to the Nazis, France. France had Petain installed as head of state not a foaming at the mouth french fascist ant-semite of which there were more than a few. The germans felt that in order to ensure the highest level of cooperation with a defeated great power, it was better to install someone who was held in some respect within that nation rather than an obvious fascist puppet. Of course political opponents of the nazis would have been rounded up and sent to camps and british jews would likely have been shipped to the continent ( as happened on the channel islands). However, i dont think that Moseley would have been chosen as PM by the germans as this would have created a greater level of disquiet amongst the uk population than was needed, when what the germans needed was cooperation with the local populace so that they could extract what they needed in terms of materiel from the uk with the most ease and so they could leave a smaller occupying force in the uk, freeing up more troops for the attack on the ussr.
    cheers,
    paul

    Hi Stantheman2,

If you want to read a good alternative history book with a germany occupying the UK, I would suggest Len Deighton's SS-GB. He has managed to write a an interesting story (A neutral US, problems with Canada etc). You should be able to get it quite cheaply. I paid 2 euros for a second hand copy.

i found an excellent book in a school library sale. Written in the early 80s it was set as an historical text book dealing with this matter.
Interestingly it had Lord Lovatt leading his commandoes in a guerilla war in the scottish highlands, until the germans brought in SS troops from eastern europe who used scorched earth and massive sweeps to bring him down.
It had liverpool football ground used for executing communists and anti german elements in liverpool.
Refugees escaped to ireland, until the germans invaded the north and south and set up an HQ in dublin and belfast. This led them into a nasty civil war with loyalists, nationalists etc. Like Poland or ukraine.
Mosley was murdered by them for deciding to be too pro british, edward was on the throne.
What was left of the navy in canada.
Excellent read and good photos was well.
