Charles Stenson married Margaret Buck in 1880. The ref. being Sept 1880 W Derby 8b 636. Margaret is listed on the 1881C as being borm abt.1844 in Cork, Ireland, married, living at 12 Hunter St., Liverpool with Chas E. Buck, her 7 mths old son.

I am unable to find any reference to either Charles (husband), Margaret or Charles (son) on any other censuses. Can a kind soul please check to see if they can find any details ?

I would also be interested to hear any views on why Margaret's son has the surname Buck, her maiden name, on the 1881C. A case of forgetfulness? or abandonment? even though she has the condition of 'marriage'

Hi Lofty Owl, In 1891, Margaret is living with her son Charles E Buck at 5, Starkie st, West Derby, details are, Margaret Stenson Widow age 33, Tailoress, born Cork, Ireland, son Charles E Buck,14, born Liverpool, Kirkdale, a port office boy, Margaret Stenson age 9, born Liverpool and Charlotte stenson age 7, born Liverpool. In 1901 Charles Buck is living with his wife Margaret, born 1874, in Liverpool, Charles was a machine minder(Print), the address was 20, Aber st, Everton. I think Charles was probably Charles's son, but born before they married, unless she was already pregnant when he met her and she named the child after him. Charles snr must have died between 1883 and 1891, if he was Charlotte's father, best wishes, Jean

Hi, I rechecked the 1881 image and it states Charles E Buck is 7yrs not 7 months so he was born c1874 - same age as his future wife.

    Thanks Jean
I trailed through the latter censuses but just could find anything. A case of not seeing the wood for the trees. Thanks very much for this. It's a great help.

Yes, you're absolutely right. I kept trying to re-read the copy of the census return and couldn't make out if he was 7 mths or 7 yrs old. Too much print smeared across the text.

I have absolutely no information on Charles snr - either from birth to death. It was simply fortunate that while scanning through the marriage records at the FRO for another name that I came across the marriage reference for Charles/Margaret. As the date of death has now been narrowed down (1883 to 1891), I can now go back and check the death records again. Hopefully, I'll find something. There's no information on line.

Hi Loftyowl, Did you actually get the marriage certificate for Charles & Margaret?, if so, what was his father's name and occupation?, best wishes, Jean

No I haven't sent for it. It's the obvious route to go down. The fact is that I'm looking at the surname of Stenson and trying to connect around 800 families listed on the 1881C. If I sent for all certificates, I'd need to take out a mortgage.

Hi, Yes, I can understand that and once you get one you want them all, I just thought it may be easier to track Charles snr down in earlier census's, he's probably under a spelling error somewhere, best wishes, Jean

    Hi,
You're right. There could be spelling mistakes, transcription mistakes, use of familiar names outside those registered. All sorts of possibilities.
I'm at the stage of this project whereby I have scrolled through all the censuses, using the Ancestry 30 day trail, and am beginning to fill in the gaps.
From your very kind help, I've been able to add an extended family network to a solitary name (plus wife - if married- and son). Without your help it wouldn't have been possible. I'm really very grateful.
Recently, thanks to the web, I was tracing one of my great great aunts. I'd reached a breakwall and had been scratching my head on how to proceed. I don't wish to bore you with the details but through an enquiry, which lead to another contact, I was put in touch with someone in Western Australia (I live north of London), who had already carried out years of research, and who it transpire was related through a g-g-g-grandfather/mother. The connection added 150 names to my list of direct ancestors. It left a wonderful feeling that through the ability to ask for help that others would be able to step in to do so.
So, thanks Jean. Watch out for other postings which I will make on the Stenson name. Thanks again
