I don't currently have access to the on-line look up of the censuses. A recent 30 day free trial on Ancestry having expired. Can a kind soul please look up John Stenson Barber, b. abt 1853 in Eastwood, Notts., on the 1871C

On the 1861C he is staying with his grandfather, David in Derby.
On the 1881C he is staying in Bishops Stortford.
On the 1891C he is a surgeon living with a housekeeper and servant in Rugby.
And on the 1901C he is still in Rugby married to Lizzie.

I would be really interested to know if the 1871C record shows any details for either of his parents.
    Thanks

Hi its Jean again, In the 1871 census there was a Percy E Barber age 12, living with David Stenson, as his grandson born Eastwood, do you think this was John's brother?

    1861 Census
Samuel J Barber 41 Architect& Surveyor Heanor Dby
    Margaret 29 Denby Dby
Mary Ann dau 7 scholar Notts Eastwood
Frances E dau 5 -do- -do-
Percy E son 2 -do- Reginald D son 11mths -do-
Sarah Housley serv 22 Notts Seston
    Church St Eastwood, Nottinghamshire
RG9 /2431 reg dist: Basford subdistrict: Greasley
    ED:5 folio: 52 page: 11 household sched: 69

Given that John Stenson Barber is living with his maternal Grandfather David Stenson in 1861 in Derby and his and Aunt Frances Mary was also born in Denby, Derbyshire this sounds like the same family.

Thanks to your search, and the addition which JC has posted, I think I would draw the conclusion that they are. Clearly David Stenson lived in Eastwood. His daughter would have married a 'Barber' in Eastwood and one of their children was given the middle name of 'Stenson', their mothers maiden name. By connecting another grandchild to David Stenson and then looking at the census record for that grandchild in another census, I think that the unravelling of this piece of the Stenson puzzle can be successfully concluded.
    Thanks ever so much

Thanks very much JC. Through the information which you and Jaean have posted, I think this piece of the 'Stenson' puzzle has been explained. Thank you very much indeed.
