My G Grandfather b 1877 and my G G Grandfather b 1837 were both Mariners and are missing from all but the 1861 census. Can anyone advise where I would be able to trace them to from 1859 to about 1920 when their youngest child was born. Many thanks in advance.
Jo
You don't say what type of mariners they were and with whom they were employed but depending on the answer, have you thought of trying to trace service records? TNA site, click on military history and then any of the categories for the different types of service for details of what is available.
Many thanks for that. In the case of Thomas Jnr - he just says Mariner on his marriage certificate. His birth certificate states Thomas Snr also as a Mariner but on my nans birth certificate Thomas Jnr profession is Fitter m Marine Engineering works. My problem is that though Jnr married in 1897 he is not on the 1901 census but had children from 1899 to 1920. Thanks for your response. I will see what I can find.
Thanks again
Jo
Jo, You could try the Register of Shipping and Seamen. They have offices in Southampton and I think their headquarters are in Cardiff. How keen they will be to extract historical information is anyone's guess, but you never know.
Good Luck. HT
