Can anyone please throw any light why all of one of my ancestors family are not on any 1871 census. They were married in 1859 and had their first child in 1860 and appear on the 1861 census living in Sunderland. By 1881 there are 4 more children and they have moved to Lincolnshire. Thereafter they are not on any of the census except for the son who moved to Deptford and had his only family. Where would I start to look to find them in 1871. Any advises would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Jo

What names are you looking for? I don't mind a creative search through the rather bad index on Ancestry this evening, if that might help.

Jo, I cannot find anything on 1871 for any of the Ayscough names even with soundex on, so it has obviously been indexed incorrectly...what's new! Where precisely was Thomas born in 1837? I'll try again then.

Bit of a tricky one this as all I have is that the only Thomas Ayscough b 1837 was born in Stallingborough and belongs to someone elses Family tree. There is nothing in the GRO for a Thomas b 1837 and as my Thomas was 22 when he married in April 1959 this was the only one that matched. But the 1861 census says he was b in Grimsby (About 10 miles away)I am Still trying to link the Stallingborough one and my G Grandfather b 1877, I am still trying to find my feet in tracing without birth certificates so am a little blind here I'm afraid and probably making the wrong assumptions. Thanks for your help. feeling a little lost and confused which is why I would like to track him to another census.

Jo, I have now tracked down part of the family on the 1891. If you click on my screen name and then the post title 'contact' under my messages, you can contact me and I will send you a copy of the census entry.

My transcription (and it isn't very good because the image is quite difficult to read and has those heavy cross throughs all over it)is as follows:

    Sub registration district: Great Grimsby

I'll check back on the 1871 and the 1901 later on.

Well Jo, I shall have to admit defeat for now although I shall return to the search because I hate being beaten.

I have checked the 1458 soundex matches for Ayscough. Nothing. I have checked under their first names only with varying dates of birth but I can never find matching family names. I have tried all sorts of keyword searches such as Lincolnshire, Sunderland, Stallingborough and Durham. I am bog eyed and still I cannot find your family.

I will try again but there is a chance that they were not included in the census. People were missed or were out every time the enumerator called for reasons of their own.

Sorry I couldn't help at the present.

Unsure how to contact you. Please help me to contact you.I have some of the info you have stated in your messages. For instance Florence Ayscough nee Dales and Ellen Dales Ayscough is my g Grandma and my Nans elder sister. My nan was born Oct 1901. Many thanks for your help in this. I can let you know what I have for sure but am concerned about a few things. - Change of name from Mary Ann to Annie in one case (Not the Ayscoughs but the Dales)between 1871 amnd 1881 I think.

Thanks again. currently at work so better get on with some.

Click on my screen name. Scroll down the list of conversations I have particpated in. Find 'contact' (it's on the first page) and then press 'contact'. On that thread you will find details of an e-mail address I use for the boards.

Changing a name from Mary Ann to Annie is not a problem. It was quite common for people to change their name to the one that was in common use rather than the name they were given at birth. In my own tree I have Ellen's known as Nellie's and Nellie's known as Ellens and Annis, known as Hannah and variations on a theme. Fickle lot those ancestors!

    Thanks

Jo> Here's the family you're after on the 1871 census (unfortunately the writing is very poor so I can't make out all the words):-

Note: The surname has been mistranscribed in the index on Ancestry as Ryscough.

    --------------------------------------

Address: 32 North ? Pl?, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland

Thomas Ayscough, Head, 33, Marriner, b. Lincs, Stallingborough (?)
Eleanor Ayscough, Wife, 29, b. Durham, Sunderland
Mary Ann Ayscough, Daur, 10, Scholar, b. Durham, Sunderland
John C Ayscough, Son, 7, Scholar, b. Kent, Deptford
    Martha (?) S Ayscough, 6, Scholar, b. Durham, Sunderland
Eleanor Ayscough, 2, b. Durham, Sunderland
Robert H Cummins, 18, Shipwright, b. Durham, Sunderland

Hope this helps with your research.

    Regards

    John

Many thanks for your response. As Isabel says she found it for me too. He was on the 1861 census as born in Grimsby but I think that was jsut lazy. Also on the 1881 census he was on the vessel albert. I initially discounted this as it was a year out but think I must accept this as his family.

    Thanks again

    Jo
