My bother in law has a double barrel surname and no one knows where it has come from. The only info we have is that his father was born 1920`s. I have checked 1901 census and this name does not appear, As far as we are aware his father lived in Malta for seven years and was in the navy, What is my next step Thank You
Hi,

Hi, the name i am resarching is Savage-Brookes
Double-barrelled names generally start with a marriage between people with the individual family names, commonly to avoid one of the names dying out. It's difficult to guess which of the names belonged to the bride's family and which the groom's - family politics would decide that.
Just "honouring" ancestors usually ends up as a middle name rather than double-barrelling.
I'd guess that you are looking for a Savage family or a Brookes family with no male children.
I wonder if there was an inheritance at stake?

Hi thanks for that, no there is nothing involved just trying to find where the name started
Hi
This thread brought to mind something I read about a person whose father died young and who added their step-fathers name to their original surname, making it double barrel.
The National Archives would have infomation on this person in their navy records - next of kin should give you some clues.
