My G Grandma, Eleanor Cummins married my G Grandfather,Thomas Ayscough, in April 1859. Thereafter and on all census's she is stated as being born about 1843 but probably 1842. But she says she was 20 on the marriage certificate. A little white lie me thinks as Thomas was 22. Not unusual I understand as it was common to match your spouses age as close as possible. My problem is I cannot trace her birth. I have looked at the records office, Freebmd and 1837 online. Nothing. can anyone give any advise as to why her birth is not registered or where else I could look. Any advises would be gratefully received.

Thanks for your prompt reply. That must be her as all her siblings were born in Durham according to the 1861 census. And her parents were John and Ann. I know why I missed it now. The 1881 census says she is 38 and so I assumed she was born between March 1842 and March 1843. So that was the dates I searched. But in the 1861 census she was 19 which would be correct for Dec 1841. I didn't look for 1841. I suppose as she gained 3 years for her marriage cert, I suppose it is plausible for her to lose a year in her late 30s. Thank you so much. I thought I was going mad.

    Cheers

    Joan
