I'm struggling with pulling together the details of my grandfather's life. I have made some progress but am now frustrated by not being able to trace any details of his death (date, place, circumstances).
Frederick Arthur Steele - born 22 July 1881 in Anstey, Leics - married Emma Turner 10 Sept 1905 in Altringham, Cheshire - then married Ada Wilson 18 April 1908 at St Thomas', Crookes, Sheffield. (believe Emma died in June 1908 - possibly in childbirth as I have found a birth registered of Doris Emma Steele around that same time - not known if child survived) Frederick & Ada had 7 sons - apart from my father, I have,as yet, been unable to trace any of these.
Frederick Arthur lived at 17 Bute Street, Crookes, Sheffield between 1919-20 and 1938-39 (according to Kelly's) then, I believe, moved to No 41 Bute Street - although the Electoral Registers only list occupancy there by Ada (from 1945 - 1959 when, presumably, she died - although not yet traced this).
I believe he died sometime between 1940 and 1945 - a family anecdote has it that he died in his railway signalbox (he was a signalman) , but I have no confirmation of this, nor the location. I've spent many watery-eyed hours in Sheffield Archives but just cannot find anything.
If anyone has further suggestions for lines of investigation, I would be most grateful.
Many thanks
RCS
Dear Mr Steele.
I suppose you must have tried 1837 online.
If you haven't,and you are pepared to take out another mortgage,I suggest you would find most of what you are looking for,on there.

Another thought have you tried the Cemetery records which I see are on Microfilm at Sheffield Archives? Or have you tried looking for a will?
Regards
Bill
If the story about Frederick dying in his signalbox is correct then there should be some record at The National Archives, Kew, or any other London Midland Scottish Railway records archive, although it could have been due to enemy bombing or something similar.
Many thanks Bill - some of these look to be my father's siblings - may I ask where you found this information (for future reference - there's still one or two missing).
Thanks for suggestion on cemetereis - one of my next steps, ditto will.
RCS
Thanks for this - your advice on how to make contact with Kew or other archives would be further appreciated.

Hi
I use the familyrelatives.com site and it's indexed between 1866 and 1920. From Sept 1911 the mother's maiden name is specified in the index so I just searched for all births from Sept 1911 to 1920 with the name of Steele where the mother's maiden name is Wilson.
Regards
Bill
