Can anyone tell me the easiest way to trace the military history of my 2xG-grandfather who was in the Royal Artillery in the 1850's/1860's? I've discovered from the 1871 and 1881 that he and his wife had various children born in England, Ireland, Wales and Bermuda - presumably because of his postings!

I think I will need to visit the National Register office at Kew, but what sort of information will I need (and where can I get it) before I go, in order to make the best use of time?

    Many thanks!

If his service ended before 1855 he should be listed on The National Archives,Kew,catalogue in series WO 97 or WO 121 and some information about him may be found.

If not and he was just a gunner or bombardier and not an officer then you need to look at the WO 10 registers, which are very heavy and arranged by place and quarters of the year. The Royal Artillery was separated into various coastal batteries as well as the regular artillery.
