Hi
I have an ancestor who unfortunately has rather a common name and he resided in London, making the task of tracing him even more onerous! One thing that may help me though is his occupation. He was a cork cutter.
Would there have been any organisation around London in the 1840s (roughly) that dealt with cork cutters, or would there be any publications that may list cork cutters at all that are available for family historians...?
Thanks
Hi Stoggler,
My G, G, Grandfather was also a Cork Cutter in the docks of east London and whilst I can not be 100% certain I believe it was to do with ship building/repairs to decking and running rigging.
I have not been able to discover any publications or organisations they may help up to know.
I did enquire at the Mile End Heritage (Family) Centre i.e., Docking and ship repair companies, but they were unable to assist either.
Sorry I can be of no more help to you
Regards
Spike
Cheers Spike
Actually, that does help a little, as I now know that cork cutters had on or with ships. Makes sense too, as my ancestor lived in Stepney and then emigrated to Oz where he lived in a port town (Williamstown near Melbourne)
I too have corkcutter ancestors. If you go to rootschat.com, there is a forum dedicated to Occupations which has a long thread about corkcutters. One member recently wrote an article about them for one of the monthly genealogy magazines, and is compiling an index of corkcutters. She would be delighted to have the details of yours, and will let you know if she has any information on him.
Brillent! thank you Anisel

When was that? And what was he called?
Mine was called James Holmes Johnson and he was living in Stepney in 1848 when he married. He left England for Australia in 1858.
Richard Milligan. In 1850 living in Old Bethnal Green Road before moving to Diggon Street approx 1856. His Son James was a Cork Sorter.

So I wonder how likely it is that our two ancestors knew each other, considering that they were in the same occupation in the same part of London at the same time...?
Perhaps they did? If I obtain any details, names of companies, places of work etc., I will post them on the board. I will also check out that web site suggested by Anisel.
Regards
Spike
