Samuel Powell was born in Exminster in Devon around 1836/7. I desperately need to find the names of his parents. Can anyone help please?

There is no Samuel Powell below 10 years old in Exminster in the 1841 census.

In 1851 there is a 12 year old Samuel Powell, born Exminster, working as a farm servant in Dunchideock. He is not with his parents, but there is a 13 year old Richard Powell there too, also a farm servant.

There is no sign of him in 1861.

Well spotted, Cassie. In 1871 he claims Exminster again. It's an interesting family setup - he's 23 and his wife is 49! Samuel is an excavator, James a butcher. They are at Macey Street, Torpoint.

Exminster and Chudleigh are about 10 miles apart, and separated by the Haldon Hills which would have made it a considerable trek in those days, so I'm not sure why Samuel would claim one or the other. But there is a 2 year old Samuel living in Harcombe, Chudleigh, in 1841 with an older brother Richard (as in 1851).

    John Powell 25 Ag Lab
    Ann Powell 25 Ag Lab
    Jane Powell 6
    Richard Powell 4
    Samuel Powell 2

Remember that adult ages are rounded down in the 1841 census, so his parents could have been anything between 25 and 29.

The IGI (familysearch.org) has an extracted parish record for the marriage of John Powell and Ann Snell, 27 April 1834 in Exminster. So it looks possible that at least one of his parents came from Exminster, and he may indeed have been born there if Ann went home to Mum for the birth, but that they lived in Chudleigh.

Thanks Anisel. That's exactly the information I was looking for! This has solved a very complicated mystery.
