I wonder if anyone can advise.... I'm seeking my Grandmothers Grandparents - of Scottish descent.

Both born about 1847, both hail from Milnathort, Kinross, Fife.

I've looked on freeBmd and on ScotlandsPeople (to which I have a subscription) but cannot find them.

They were married in 1868 in London but didn't always live there as far as I can tell - I cannot find them on early England Census records.

If anyone has any clues as to where I can look, or can look up possible births of these two, I'd be very grateful.

    Seeking -
John Coventry son of James Coventry
Johannah Forsyth, daughter of James Forsyth

It's not possible for me to actually visit any scottish public records office this year but if any exist then if anyone has contact details for them, this may be a start.

    Thanks in advance!

They are in London in 1871, at 22 Old Kent Road. John is a pastrycook, Margaret Forsyth is a seamstress and Harry Skilleter is a tailor. John's birthplace is transcribed as Kinson but the image clearly shows Kinross.

Johannah F Coventry abt 1848 Ross, Scotland Wife St George the Martyr Southwark London
John Coventry abt 1849 Kinson, Scotland Head St George the Martyr Southwark London
Margaret Forsyth abt 1842 Ross, Scotland Visitor St George the Martyr Southwark London
Florence Skilleter abt 1869 Southwark, Surrey, England Visitor St George the Martyr Southwark London
Harry A Skilleter abt 1845 Foots Cray, Kent, England Visitor St George the Martyr Southwark London
Maria Skilleter abt 1847 Prinlico, Middlesex, England Visitor St George the Martyr Southwark London

    Source information: RG10/601
    Registration district: St Saviour Southwark
    Sub-registration district: Kent Road
    ED, institution, or vessel: 16

They are also in London in 1881, 1891 and 1901. The 1881 census is available free on familysearch.org

Wow - that's a lead to follow up. Will get a copy of the census next time I'm at the PRO.

Maybe a daft question but I'm still at a loss how to find their birth certs..as I said freebmd and scotlands people didn't turn them up. I've only ordered certs for people living in England and had a squizz on the net for ordering scottish birth certs but these seemed to only be for post 1850, so slightly too late for these two.

It may be that Margaret is James' wife - I'd suspected this so hopefully when I print off the extract, the ages will provide the info I need.

    Thanks for your help!

Hi, if you know the district, vol, and page number, which have been provided above, you can apply for copy certificates at . It costs Β£7 per copy.

Margaret is unmarried. Given her age, isn't she much more likely to be Johannah's sister?

Scotland didn't start registering births until 1855, so you are not going to get birth certificates. Any records will probably be in parish registers. Have you checked out the Fife Family History Society pages to see what resources are available?

In addition, Scotland's People only includes those in the Church of Scotland and not those like the Free Churches or the Roman Catholic Church. Up to 1854 some baptisms also include dates of birth.
