Hi, I have just received a death certificate for my gg grandfather, William Bailey, who died on 18.07.1881, in an accident working as a joiner on the Barnsley to Hull railway, it says there was a inquest held in Pontefract the day after, could anyone tell me how to get a copy of the inquest or does anyone know where the relevant newspapers for this area will be held?, best wishes, Jean

    Hi,
Your best bet is to contact the local County Record Office, who should be able to help.

    Regards

    Bill

Pontefract is in the old West Riding of Yorkshire. The records you seek may be in the West Yorkshire Records Office in Wakefield. (Wakefield was the old administrative centre of the former West Riding).

    Hi

From the West Yorkshire Archive Service

    Coroners’ Records

From 1752, coroners had to send inquest returns to Quarter Sessions in order to claim their expenses. These returns are preserved in the Sessions files. They record:

    Date of the inquest
    Name of the deceased
    Verdict of the jury

The returns do not give any other details about the death. Local newspapers may give further information.

You cannot look at coroners’ records for 75 years after the inquest.

Apart from some nineteenth century material for the Liberty of Ripon area, full inquest papers (giving much more detail than the inquest returns to Quarter Sessions) only survive from the late 1940s. Our Wakefield office however holds a set of notebooks belonging to one Thomas Taylor, who was County Coroner and coroner for the Honor of Pontefract in the late nineteenth century. These notebooks are a personal record of the cases where he presided.

    Regards

    Bill

Thanks Bill, I think I would be better finding the newspapers, as William Bailey is a popular name and I want to be sure that he is the right one. It says on the death certificate that he died on, (what looks like), the High Soneaton cutting of the Hull and Barnsley railway, although in the where and when box it says Barnsdale, High Soneaton, if you are local to the area, have you ever heard of any of these places?, also it says the certificate was received from the deputy coroner, a W E Carter, for Honors of Pontefract, Best wishes, Jean
