Hi i am a new member, researching my great grandfather Simon Larkin born 1845 in Ireland. He died in 1920 and lived in Jarrow, South Shields. He married a Mary Doudican in 1871. They had 4 children Thomas born 1872 James born 1873, Mary born 1875 and my grandfather Patrick born 1880.

I am having great difficulty confirming Simons birth deatils. I know his fathers name was HUGH LARKIN born in ireland in the 1820s and the family are Roman Catholic. Had an unsuccessful trip to Dublin National Library as could not pin point the exact area Simon was born.

Please can anyone help. Thank you Malshie

Hi Malshie, I see your Simon didn't seem to know quite where he was born, in 1881 he says his birthplace is Poland, is there any possibility this could be so?, it seems strange to put another country completly, in 1891 he said it was Ireland, but place NK, I think if he was born in Ireland, you may be able to trace his birth certificate, especially as you know his parents names, sorry not to of more help, best wishes, Jean

Thank you Jean for you reply.
Yes you are right the 1881 census would indicate he was born in Poland. However I beleive the ennumerator probably wrote it down wrongly when transcribing the data. My guess is that he read Ireland as Poland. The 1891 entry of "Ireland NK" seems more accurate as Larkin is an Irish name. I presume the NK means Not Known but I'm just guessing - perhaps someone can confirm this?

Hi Malshie, Yes NK does mean Not Known, my great grandfather also put this in the 1891 census, along with Yorkshire, in 1901 he put he was born Blackpool in Lancs, my problem was I couldn't find him in any other census to confirm either of them, but I eventually found him in 1881, his name was Richard Bailey, but on this census he had become Bayliff, born Blackpool abt 1869, trouble is I can't seem to find a birth index for him. Anyway I can understand what you mean about the Poland bit, I suppose if he had a strong accent he would be hard to understand, if I can be of any further help please let me know, best wishes, Jean

There was a Simon Larkin living at 12, Wear Street, Jarrow, in 1910. Got this from the Jarrow site.

    Hello MoiraEBV

Thank you so much for the information. No I did not have any record that my grt.grandfather Simon Larkin had remarried.

Yes I had found him on the 1901 census of England but other than his age i had no more information.

I did visit the family records centre in London and managed to obtain his Marriage Certificate to his first wife Mary Doudican, and found out the name of his father which is HUGH LARKIN but now i have hit a brick wall as Hugh was born in Ireland but where i do not know?

You have been a great help in giving me the other website! i am very excited as i feel i am finally making some progress in my research.
    Regards Malshie.
