Hi all I am researching my family tree on my mother's side- her maiden name was Mayou. I know her father's name was Sidney (or Sydney - not sure of the spelling) Mayou and she thinks his dad shared that name too. I have looked for this name but i cant find it anywhere for any date on any websites. She recalls they were a family of coal-miners. Can anyone help? thanks.

There are quite a few Mayous on Ancestry. Do you know what area they were from?
There is a Sydney Mayou marrying either Florence Jester or Sarah Theresa Evans, in the last quarter of 1897 in Aston, Birmingham. Then there is a Sydney James Mayou born Walsall 12 June 1906, who died in June 1990 also in Walsall, and another Sydney Mayou born 30 March 1918 and died in Birmingham February 1988.
However, there don't seem to be any Sidney/Sydney Mayous in the censuses. Could he have been Mayo, or Mayho as there are some of them. Any indication of time and place would help.

Hi,
I don't know if the following will help or hinder because I have very little experience in researching family history, but have you thought of looking at the Mayou name with a different spelling?
Mayou sounds French to me and in my area we would write that name as Mailloux.
Just a thought.
Good luck with your research.
Francine

Thanks Anisel, the Sydney Mayou born 1918 and died in Birmingham, 1988 is my grandad, but i think the one from Aston may be my great grandfather. I will look into it- thanks again.

Hi anisel, i was born and still live in Birmingham, and i know that up to my grandad (the Sydney Mayou you found 1918-1988) were born in Birmingham. My mom remembers something about ancestors living in Aston, Birmingham, but that is all i know about that side of my family. Thanks for your help, frm devil_lena
