To all members of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ History message boards
We're very sorry to say that we're going to be closing the History message boards and we wanted to tell you here first:
History Hub
Family Trees
Ancient and Archaeology
Wars and Conflict
Unfortunately due to Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Online’s restructure and redundancies, we're not able to carry on all of our web offerings and the History message boards are one of those that are having to close. We wanted to give you all as much notice as possible, so the four boards mentioned will close at 5pm on Thursday 22 December. The Friday Quiz will end as of today, but please feel free to start your own quizzes until the boards close in two weeks’ time.
Please note that the message boards and their content aren’t being deleted from the web; all of your discussions, debate and information will remain on the site for your reference in the future.
We've loved reading your posts, and setting the History Quiz every week, and we wanted to thank each and every one of you for contributing. For those of you who would like to continue to share your love of history there are other boards available you may like to try:
- To discuss Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ History TV programming
- for general history chat
You can read more about the Online re-structure and Delivering Quality First here:
Please note, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ is not responsible for the content of external websites.
We’ll leave this thread open for you to discuss where you might like to go from here.
The following may answer some of your questions…
Why is the board closing?
Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Online has undergone 25% cuts as part of the Delivering Quality First review. This has meant a sizeable reduction in staff to the point where services have had to be cut.
You can read more about the Online re-structure and Delivering Quality First here:
This is not what I would like as a licence fee payer.
The Putting Quality First review has reconsidered how the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ can most effectively use its resources, and outlined the services that it will reduce and close as part of Delivering Quality First. Unfortunately message boards are one of these services.
Why is the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ censoring message boards?
The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ does not censor message boards. You can, of course, still go to the other boards mentioned to discuss Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ programming.
Why weren’t we told about the closure before?
The final decision to close the boards has only just been taken. We have worked to give users two weeks’ notice so they can get used to the idea and familiarise themselves with the other message boards suggested as alternatives.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ History website team

Great Christmas present from the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ here folks.

oh well I had better put up our next meeting place come the 22nd for anyone who wanders into this soon to be deserted ghost board!
Our favourite meeting hole after the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ is www . rootschat . com its FREE to join and there is a warm welcome and a wealth of knowledge over a variety of boards. We can post photos and have a personal message system over there... something the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ has never ever managed to set up here.
For chitchat and non--family history stuff, Rootschat have a totally off topic board where I sure another bar will be set up by the regulars. Those those that pass through this is where we refer to OTR
Another free board frequently used, especially for adoption and other sensative queries is familytreeforum.co.uk This board is not searchable from the web and the boards are private.
Happy Christmas everyone...
obviously the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ have no room in their stable this Christmas - too busy reorganising and dumbing down their website from the front backwards.
It was very obvious this was going to happen when the new Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ home page didn't link to any of the message boards. oh well....
see you around

Wonderful
They'll have to take the link off 'who do you think you are' website.
There's a forum on the who do you think you are magazine. But most of us are with rootschat anyway I think.
We knew it was on the cards.

Well, if they are going to shut one message board, then they should shut them all! The closure message only appears on the History Message Boards, so presumably the others are remaining open.
I just searched for Message Boards on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ and did not realise there were so many!
For interest, here they are and the number of postings on them. We certainly are not being closed for lack of use! Obvously these figures will be changing as people post replies!)
History (4 sub boards) 689,018 replies
6 Music (2 sub boards) 11,915 replies
Archers (9 sub boards) 5,517,286 replies
Food 1,133,763 replies
Gardening (4 sub boards) 594,101 replies
Learning English (2 sub boards) 511,279 replies

I have never been a regular visitor in "the bar" but I have found this to be a very friendly and useful place to find help with my family history research. This is happening just as I am about to start on a huge update of records, and was looking forward to posting my brick walls on the board..
See you all over the road.

Well as others have said this was not exactly unexpected.
I shall hopefully see you all OTR.

Fine thanks for giving the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Family Trees Meesageboard a plug in the dedication of my book!
Oh yeah, great, go on www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb...
I seem to remember that after the stupidity when I was kicked off the History Board years back for using the triangle too often, I was allowed to return, but banned from other boards.
That's me out then ...
So the next Oxford meet will be a Roots meet, not a Beeb meet.
Wonder if we will have new friends come to join us .........
Oh well, never mind. Worse things happen at sea.

Blowing a big sloppy raspberry at the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ and saying BAH HUMBUG!!!!!
What is the sense in closing a board that helps people and where people come to request help, rather than just being a discussion board? Bet whoever decided doesn't have the same hobby as us!
Leaves through the back door giving the Beeb a slow hand clap for their lack of thought to the users ....

Thanks Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ for the Christmas present, eh just so typical of you something that is well used by so many people, and so very usuful, what else would you do but close it down. May I make sugestion cut back on the over inflated wages you pay your top brass and then just maybe the public could and would have the service they deserve.
Do you not know or is it that you just don't care how much pleasure this site gives to people, personally I think it's the latter, go on proof me wrong and overturn this very very unpopular desision, now that would make for a happy new year. ( I won't hold my breath)
disgusted

Very sad to hear this. I'm not on here very often but when I first started my research a few years ago the help and advice I received (and still do!) was amazing. A lovely group of people who would bend over backwards if they could help.
What a shame. A very sad day. Will there a party of to end all parties in the bar on the 22nd???
Link to this forum: Closure of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ History Message Boards
Well folks the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ has been dumbing down for some time, which considering that WE ALL PAY THEIR WAGES, is a cheek of the first order!
Thanks for the worst Christmas present that we have ever had, Not tidings of great joy is it??.
Now you know why we have all drifted away, you should all be ashamed of spoiling the years of fun that we have had on here.

I am saddened that the Beeb should decide on such an action under the guise of SAVING MONEY. The amounts they would be saving by closing these boards are minimal and hardly worth mentioning compared to what they could save by more prudent use of the licence fee which we all stump up albeit more and more unwillingly. Less and less is provided for people like ourselves.
I am amazed that no-one has has picked up on the fact that two people from opposite sides of the world have actually met up through the auspices of this board. How likely is something like that to happen anywhere else.
WDYTYA has been one of your flagship programmes and we on the board have helped steer people through finding their way round the information that is referred to in this programme. Who will be there for them now....though perhaps WDYTYA is on it's way out now too.
If there was anyone with any go in them at all they would see so many real life stories that have developed on this board that we have loved and cried over.
Come on you hosts look at what you are doing....consider what you are saving and realise the people who use these boards deserve better treatment.

Well we will all be found at either
....or..........
and still helping out with family history research all for free of course as these other Forums are better than this one with lots more free facilities and much more freedom of speech as well as personal message systems in place where you can give details in private

Ok I have been expecting this for a long time but why close something that runs well and helps people. I have been helped a lot on this board and I have also helped a few people.
I help to run a Family History group and this is one place that I always recommend.

this is a great shame but a sign of the times we are experiencing. im not too sure where i am at with my family research due to my wealth of information gathered from this wonderful site. i am not in a position to subscibe to the sites available online. people on here have been so kind in helping me to research and put me in the right direction and giving me the chance to connect with them all my long gone ancestors. thankyou everybody. the other thing is i have been recovering over the last year from 2 total knee replacements and this site has given me raised spirits on rather gloomy days. let me know where you all are and i will join you

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ what are you thinking......?
Although I don't post very often, I visit this site almost daily. It is one of the more popular sites for research and friendliness, and I'm certain that many people will agree on that.
Link to this forum: Closure of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ History Message Boards
Well as expected the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ have got what is important to the people who pay their wages wrong. After reading the news I am left with a phrase going through my head that my cousin wrote to me when I found the rest of my dad's family after 43 years. (helped by this board who assisted in finding them, and then gave me the courage to contact them)
" This is not just family history, this is FAMILY."
And that is what the members on here made it feel like, with the help, support, advice and friendship that has been given so freely by so many on this board. Long may it continue elsewhere.

Drop into the bar to see where we are all moving to and you can add your user name OTR to a thread on this board so you can be contacted again.
Bo no need to be alone or bettyespania as we have a new place but need to find our feet but stay in touch, and that goes for anyone else wanting to continue the friendships found through this board
Go on, Give it a try
If you dont like it just now you may like it further down the line, but we can all be found on rootschat or familytreeforum

Sad to see the dishing out of the humbugs leading to the impending closure of the Board before Xmas. I've had some great help over the years.
Does make me wonder if WDYTYA has run its course on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ and if it does continue it will be with another broadcaster.

For users of these message boards i have created a new forum even though it sounds as though some of you have found a place to go already. Please feel free to stop by and offer feedback, leave messages and the like. I have literally just done this today while at work so it is very much in its infancy so any comments, advice or assistance offered would be gratefully received. What I need most though are members...
