I know my grandfather entered France on 19 Sept 1914 and was captured at Ypres only 6 weeks later on 31 October 1914. I also know his subsequent movements as a PoW courtesy of the International Red Cross.

My mother (his daughter) has expressed a wish to see the actual places where his unit would have fought but I haven't been very successful in establishing his exact movements over this 6 week period.

Does anybody know of a site/forum where I could seek some specific assistance? I did think OTR but there didn't appear to be anything specific.

    Thanks, Pheno

If you know which regiment he was in, their Regimental Diary will give a fair amount of detail of their movements at that time. I don't know how to access it, but somebody will. You might find this useful:

Sorry, I should have said that yes I do know his regiment and have looked at the war diaries but I still can't fathom his actual movements. The diaries are written in terms of x brigade of y battalion did this etc and I'm having trouble determining which brigade he was in and then which battalion was this brigade in at a set time etc.

I need a military history site that I can plug the data into and it will give me the answer!!

If you can find his medals record at The National Archives then the card shouild list his regiment and unit. Most regiments have published an official history and the regimental museum may be able to help.

    Hi
You could try 'The Long Long Trail' website which is a mine of info on the British Army of WW1.

There is already a link to The Long Long Trail in my previous message!
Things were so confused on those battlefields (or any battlefield, really) you may never know exactly where he was. If you can manage to find what his battalion was doing, you may get a rough idea.

Success - thanks didn't think of using the medal record card which did indeed give his regiment. Also company info given in detail from International Red Cross which I hadn't revisited. Then using the Long Trail I was able to find war diary info so can now draw up an itinerary for a visit.

    Thanks for the suggestions.
