please could somebody please look up my great grandfathers military record. william davis born about 1880 in welwyn. dad told me yesterday he served in the 1st world war. incididently what age did they sign up to fight and when were you too old? thanks
There is no service record on ancestry, so either it was destroyed in 1940, or died during the First World Wa or he served after 1920 in which case the file may be in the MInistry of Defence in Glasgow.

A number of men had previously been in the Army or were in the Territorial Reserve.

I think officially you had to be 18 to sign up , tho there's many that gave false info and signed up when younger , not sure what the upper age limit was , just so long as you passed the medical . an ancestor of my husband was aged 54 when he joined , as a driver ,
Well he would have been about 24 so old enough to be called up if he didn't enlist (unless unfit)
thankyou all. i was told he had served in the army as i found this out after discussing with my old dad when my great aunt was born, guess the record was destroyed
