  My grandfather apparently lied about his age and went off to the trenches. Over the years he said very little about the whole thing - all I can remember is that he witnessed the Angle of Mons ... I've tried searching the military records to no avail. Thomas Edward Farnworth lived in Bolton born 26th Aug 1898. Any help much appreciated.

  Do you have any idea which unit he was in, there are various Thomas Farnworth files but if he gave his wrong age then the records will have the wrong date of birth!. Have you looked at those on ancestry and The National Archives (TNA), Kew, with any links to his parents and address who should be listed. A number of Army records of non-officers were housed in the Army Pay Office but which were destroyed by enemy bombing in 1940 and the files of any non-officer who served after 1918 will probably still be at the Ministry of Defence in Glasgow. Records of officers are held at TNA but are not fully indexed by name.
  
  I assume you were referring to the Angel of Mons in 1915 and according to wikipedia it was a myth of govenment propoganda unless you know otherwise.
