I am not sure how to find out what happened to my great auntie ... something not nice as it has been hidden from us and now all the people who actually knew are no longer with us. Helen Forrest (known as Nell or Nellie) was born 1906 Whittington, Lancs. Apparently she left the family home in shame in her late teens/early 20's - rumour has it she may have committed suicide. I have tried a search of death certificates without success. I am new to this family research and would appreciate any help. Thank you.

Hello Maz and welcome to the board,

Your messages go through moderation for 20 messages and dont appear right away so dont get disheartened as someone will try to answer your message.
Are you in Lancashire as the Lancashire records Office may have newspapers of the time but that would entail a long trawl through microfilm

Have you tried googling for the details something may show up or talk to local people perhaps but a marriage may be best to search for or a death but people here may be able to help with that if you give the details.
Remember not to include names of any living people.

Remember that back in the 1920s the shame may have been for something in todays world to be something trivial.

    Edna

Hi Maz - there are two interesting entries on freeBMD for 2nd qr 1924 for Nellie Forrest. One died aged 2 in the Worksop district and the other aged 18 near Nottingham - which is about 20 miles further south.

It may be sheer coincidence but there are not many Nellie Forrests on the register.

The certificates may give further details - but only as far as the persons registering the deaths knew.

I can't see a birth for your gt aunt in Lancashire in 1906 but there is one in Basford - which looks like the 18year old who died in 1924.

No she was definately born 1906 (I have this info from genesreunited) and her name was registered as Helen (but known to the family as Nell or Nellie). She is thought to have gone off to Plymouth but rumoured to have met her end on the railway line at Oxenholme station, near Kendal ...

Thank you.Β  Do you have her birth certificate as it would help to know what name she was born under to see if there is any other record. I would expect a suicide to be in the local newspapers and you might also want to look in Lancashire Record Office in case there is a coroner's report but which are not always kept . Have you looked at any family wills to see if there is any mention of her.

One of the first lessons of family hunting is not to rely on other people's trees! Also we often find Ellen and Helen being interchangeable

Do you have her parents names as a find in 1911 may be able to shed a light on her age and where she was born?

You have to be careful with passenger lists for a Helen Forrest as there is one born 1906 in Glasgow, going back and forth with family from Glasgow to Canada, none of the family names match those of those found on 1911.

Message 10 has all the information I have and this is the correct family. Her date of birth is 1906. I need to know how to move this on ... I paid for info on 1911 census and wasted 2 lots of credits on the wrong person ... any more suggestions please? How do you get info from after 1911?

The census was taken April 2nd and the age of the date of birth was calculated from the age given. As with all censuses, there is a 75% chance that the birth was the year before because of the date the census was taken. If you don't have a birth cert, you cannot know for sure that she was born in 1906 just from the census.

In the grand scheme of things it isn't important except if you are trying to find her death were her year of birth should be clarified. But on saying that if she left home and died without anyone knowing her, that would not be much good either. I suspect the birth in message 5 is the right one though.

After 1911 there really isn't much documented information about individuals and certianly very little on line. You could try the black sheep website. See if you find anything
