If a person on 1911 Census dropped his first name and was known as his middle name would he when marrying have to produce Birth cert or could he marry using middle name. I am trying to find out if my Uncle married after 1911 Census but it is a bit hopeless with a surname Davies. Thanks Syljun

I think the answer is maybe/maybe not.

HE might not have dropped his first name, but maybe he was just known in the family by his middle name. If for instance his father was William and the son was William John, I can understand why they knew himas John.

PS : I too have been through the hell that is searching for a Davies, and come out totally unfulfilled.

Hi, I have only recently had a breakthrough finding William Thomas Davies on 1911 Census with help after many years searching. He was in lodgings on 1911 Census living away from home as Thomas Davies 21 single. Obviously the householder filled in Census form. I agree it is hopeless and searching Marriages with either christian name is a waste of time. It was only through researching the householder's family that sure connection was made.
Ah well! hope I can stick around for 2021 Census. Have searched through countless Army records but no joy. Syljun

In the past in UK no paper Id was required for Marriage. It was

assumed you were telling the truth. If in a Village Community the

Registrar or Priest knew otherwise , couples just moved on & married

elsewhere. I have several certs which could have been proved to

contain "mistakes"-- the Vicar was new or did not know the couple.

As for given names it was easy to forget one you did not like.

Very different from present times when all day long we are being

asked for ID or even photo Id. Make a mistake with an online booking

& youre in trouble. Today I saw an email to a priest BAPTISMAL cert

required for school entrance in another county.
