According to the 1841 and 1851 census records, Elizabeth is a widow living in the home of her daughter Ann (b. abt 1810 in Harwell, Berks) and Ann's husband William Goodwin (b. abt 1808 in Harwell, Berks) in Harwell.
Can anyone help me find out more about Elizabeth, please?

Difficult without knowing her birth surname. To find that we need her marriage and I can't immediately see one, in Bucks anyway. Her daughters baptism or marriage would give the name of her father.
Presume she died before the 1861 census? I can see only 2 deaths for an Elizabeth Bedmead and neither in Bucks so bit of a mystery.

Excellent, bish.
Have found the record now on A*y. They have her as Bitmead.
She's my g.g.g.grandmother, so would dearly love to find Elizabeth's hubby too.

Not entirely sure where I got the 1830 marriage info from now that I come to look, but the eldest child I can find of their's is Thomas b. abt 1832, and given Ann and William's ages, 1830 would have been "about right".

So, it could be that Ann was illegitimate. Ah well. Happens to the best of us sometimes.
Could perhaps anyone find Elizabeth Bidmead's (v.spellings etc) birth/christening based on the census info that she came from Upton, Berks?

There's a marriage in 1830 Wm Gooden to Ann Bidmead that might be where you got it from. Parish given as Hartwell?
Gooden and Goodwin are similar.

Tourmie, I love you!
I've been completely stuck with the Goodwins and couldn't get back beyond William b. abt 1808. Someone (can't remember who) said that the Goodwins were previously known as Gooden, but although I'd seached for them on FS as Gooden couldn't find them either.
Any chance you could find me the baptism record for William in/around 1808 because that would, hopefuly give his father's name and maybe even his mother's.

> Male deaths ....
Someone on A*y has a Sarah Bidwell, b. 1780 in Harwell who's the daughter of Charles Bidwell (1751-1822) and Katherine Waterman (1743-1826), so it's possible that Sarah and Elizabeth were sisters.
It's also possible that Sarah and Elizabeth were cousins because
I was on FS a few mins ago and thought I'd found a likely Elizabeth . she was the daughter of a James, but I can't find it again at this minute. Arghhhhhh!

Sorry I can't find baptism for a William Gooden in Berks around that time. The closest is a William Gadwen belonging to Thomas and Sarah but his place of birth is Buscot
Is it possible he didn't come from there?
There's a William Gooden Lambeth Surry 1808 belonging to John and Lucy.

On all the census records, it says Harwell. Not that that necessarily means anything of course, but it's all I've got to go on.

Could someone do me another Berkshire PR look-up, please?
William Albert Goodwin married Caroline Alder. I have a copy of Caroline's birth certificate; b. 28 Dec 1852 in Hatford, Berks. Her father is given as Thomas Alder, agricultural labourer and her mother as "Honor Alder formerly Gerring". Honor was older than Thomas, so I'm thinking she had been married before.
I can't find a marriage between Thomas Alder and an Honor Gerring, but did find a marriage for a Thomas to an Honor Simpson (1847, Farringdon, Berks). On the 1841 census, in Hatford, there's a Henry Simpson, 30, and an Honor* Simpson, 30, which I think is her. Other census records have Honor's dob as about 1813.
There are three deaths of a Henry Simpson in Farringdon registration district between 1841 and 1847 (1841, 1844 and 1847), so one of those could be the death of her first husband.
So can anyone please find me the exact details of the marriage between Honor and Thomas Alder in 1847 and also details of her earlier marriage to Henry Simpson.
I've tried Family Search, but without any luck.
cheers

Gerring could be her birth name. There is an Honor Gerring Christened 13 December 1812 Shellingford Berks - do we have a birthplace for her?
Parents Thomas and Betty.
Just a thought but Simpson might be a stepfathers name if her mother remarried ie not a surname she got from a previous marriage herself.

Thanks so much Tourmie.
Census records give her place of birth as Shellingford, so that must be her christening you found in 1812. Didn't know her parents' names until you found them, so that's a real bonus.
Someone on A*y has amended the 1841 census transcription to "Henry Stimpson" (rather than Simpson or Stumps (!) ), so think I'll go for Stimpson.
Thanks again.

Thanks for all this everyone.
I've also been looking at other trees on A*y and several people have followed a real howler.
There are just a few extracted Berks records on A*y and one of them shows up as both a burial and a marriage. Several people have accepted it as a burial for both Thomas Gerring and Elizabeth (nee Goddard), when in fact it's the date of their marriage. The outcome of this is that several trees now show the pair dying a year or so before their first child was born. Doh!
Now I just need a plan to work out where William Godden/Goodwin b. abt 1808 actually came from if not from the Harwell area. [puts thinking cap on]
cheers and thanks again
