Hi, Am looking laods some help.
Ive decided to look up my great grandma and great grandad Scott.
Only thing is, i have no family members to ask any questions.
Only thing i know is that my Great-Grandad used to sell the sheffield star in sheffield city centre.
I dont know either names of them.
The odd few things i know is
They lived at 123 dryden road sheffield
they had 2 boys and twin daughters and another daughter
there names are Alan, Walter, Vera ,Brenda and sheila.
    Sheila and brenda was twins.

    My Great-grandma died in 76.
I know that this isnt much to go on, and maybe i'll not get very far.
but it would be much appreciated.

    Hi mandy
If you could give us a time it might help, like roughly when their children were born ie 1920's, 1940's? Or how how old your great grandma was when she died.

Which one was your nan - Vera, Brenda or Sheila?
We all start with a little bit of information and hopefully can then expand on it.

When you start to make your family tree, start with yourself and then your parents with your mother's maiden name (mmn), then do the same with your grandparents with the maiden names as well. And so on down the years.

Along the way you may need to get birth and/or marriage certificates to verify names and dates.

So, it sounds as if Scott was your grandmother's maiden name. ?

What was your grandmother's first name? Just so that we can look it up to verify her name, what was the name of your grandfather?

neither can I tourmie... I looked for all Yorkshire not just sheffield.

I agree with Silvery, its not impossible to get back but you do need to at least see or buy certs which means starting with you then your parents then grandparents.

I suggest you look at freebmd.org.uk and look for your parents and see what is there, then your grandparents.

You can then use the index information given to order the certificate from the gro
    www.gro.gov.uk Each cert costs Β£ 9.25

this is possibly the parents marriage
    Marriages Dec 1929
    Emerson Vera Scott Sheffield 9c 1362 <<<<<
    Hobson Rose M Mason Sheffield 9c 1362
Mason Harold Hobson Sheffield 9c 1362
    Scott Ernest Emerson Sheffield 9c 1362 <<<<<

but I strongly suggest before buying or agreeing this is the right marriage, you work back to your grandmother and obtain her marriage cert to see who is her father and her age at marriage.

see above - there was a Vera Scott death registered April-May-June 1976 Sheffield. Birth year 1904

    possible birth
    Births Dec 1904
    Emerson Vera Ecclesall B 9c 378

ps Vera was registered Oct-Nov-Dec 1932 so could be your gran. Its possible, unless you have seen her birth cert that the family didn't really know here real age.

    Looking for Walter...
I found a Walter Scott b earlier with mmn Hurst Ecclesall B
his parents were Fred Scott and Ellen Hurst, I'm wondering if your ggrandparents took in Walter for some reason or other.
You would need to find out if Ernest Scott and Fred Scott were related.

Sorry if I sound vague on dates and places but there is every chance some of these people are still living and we are not allowed to put personal data of living people on here.
You can double check on freebmd with what I have given you

I know my greatgrandma had some children that died,
but i didnt get any names,
as i was a young child when my nan was talking about her mum...
as my nan told me the story of "on her death bed" my greatgrandma died at home, on dryden rd.
And as she was dieing, she was talking to her dead children.
i just thought it was my nan trying to scare me.

    This is getting very intreasting,
and thank you all for this infomation so far.
ive got loads of birth and death certs to buy.

Emerson is an easier name to trace than Scott, so looking at your gt grandmother line, the following people LOOK promising - the certificates will confirm or otherwise.

In 1911, a Vera Emerson aged 6 was living with her grandmother Emma at Darnall in Sheffield. Emma's son George is living next door with his wife and two children so it does not look as if George is Vera's father. However, Willie Gowsell Emerson is living in the 1901 family home with wife and two daughters- but they have three living children so it is likely that they are Vera's parents.

Emma was born Emma Gowsell at Yaddlethorpe ( Scunthorpe) in 2nd qr 1853. Family :
    Thomas Gowsell 57
    Jane Gowsell 51
    George Gowsell 22
    Rebecca Gowsell 19
    Charles Gowsell 12
    Emma Gowsell 8

She married John Fenton 3rd qr 1870 (reg area Glanford Brigg) and had two sons, Charles and George. John died 1st qr 1876 so she remarried to Matthew Henry Emerson 4th qr 1877. They had at least 4 children - George, Willie, Annie and Arthur - it is possible that Annie was Vera's mother but my guess is that Vera was Willie's daughter.

    Derek

PS - can anyone find Emma in 1881?

Mandy, if you are local to Sheffield then it might be worth your while to see if the local library has a section local archives section. Many contain the microfilm of the local parish records but do check the dates they hold, they might not go up to the dates you are looking for. You can then look for the marriage and baptisms. It would save you quite a bit of money rather then send off for the certs. As you know the area, you probably have a good idea which church they married in.
See the marriage entry will give you the name of Vera and Ernest's fathers. It will help to go back even further.

Also, while at the library, ask if you can use one of their public computers to look at Ancestry. You can do a birth search for the name Scott 1929 - 1945 with a mothers maiden name of Emerson or EMMERSON in Sheffield registration district.

    Mandy

Re message 18 - the Sheffield Indexers site contains many BMD records including the burial of Maureen Scott on Sept 27th 1937 at City Rd cemetery - age 3 months , dau of Ernest Scott. There is also record of a stillborn child from the same address (11 Hague St) buried Apr 4th 1936.

These were probably on your gt grandma's mind - I remember my grandma never forgot the baby she lost.

    Derek
